With astounding pragmatism, German Christian Zacharias knew that only one or two pianists of his generation would make it to the top in his country, so he gave himself until the age of 25 to succeed in his career. If by then he was staying at home waiting for phone calls with concert invitations, he would take up a different career. It was precisely that year that he won the Ravel Competition. Scarlatti was already by then one of his core composers, always ending his concerts with the Sonata in G Major, K.55, and even having recorded some twenty renditions of the piece in the Encore album to make the point that it is impossible to set a definitive version.
