Ancient Egypt selected by Howard Carter

The statuette of the official Bes is just one of the pieces acquired for this collection on the advice of the celebrated British Egyptologist Howard Carter, famous for his discovery of the Tutankhamen’s tomb.

An extraordinary collection of Greek coins

The Museum displays a magnificent collection of Greek coins, being one of the most important ever assembled privately, following the expert advice of E.S.G. Robinson, a curator at the British Museum.

From China to Japan, the exquisiteness of the Far East

Porcelains and hard stones from China, lacquers and prints from Japan are the cornerstone of this part of the collection, which includes many pieces from Sir Trevor Lawrence’s collection.

Rich Eastern Islamic Art acquired in travels around the world

Ancient Persia, Turkey, Syria, Central Asia and Egypt, from the 12th to the 18th century, a vast and rich collection of objects, including textiles, ceramics, glassware, illuminated manuscripts and bindings. These were collected in his travels, from London to Cairo, Beirut to Damascus.

Sumptuous European Decorative Arts

16th-century tapestries from Flanders and Italy, a remarkable set of furniture and luxurious pieces of French jewellery from the 18th century. These are some of the pieces exhibited in this elegant collection, that incorporates many objects from the Hermitage, acquired by Calouste Gulbenkian around 1930.

Centro de Arte Moderna

The Centro de Arte Moderna is temporarily closed for renovation and will reopen fully refurbished in 2024. The architectural project by Kengo Kuma will reimagine the space to host the most complete collection of Portuguese modern and contemporary art.

Gulbenkian Garden

Considered an oasis in the centre of Lisbon, this is one of the city’s best gardens and a favourite of its inhabitants. In 2024, the grounds will extend to 8.000m2 of green spaces as part of the landscape renovation of the Modern Art Centre (Centro de Arte Moderna), designed by Vladimir Djurovic.
