Yto Barrada. Moi je suis la langue et vous êtes les dents

The eighth exhibition in the Project Space series presents artist Yto Barrada (Paris, 1971) and suggests a set of works, some of which have never been seen, strongly influenced by the notions of history and identity, inspired by her Moroccan origins and by the colonial and post-colonial past of this African country. This project follows the artist’s interest on the figure of Thérèse Rivière (Paris, 1901-1970), a French ethnologist who went to Algeria in the 1930s to study the women and children of the Berbere Chaouias people.

In the book that accompanies this exhibition, curator Rita Fabiana writes about Yto Barrada’s work, reinforcing the strong relation between her work and the question of identity, associated with the artist’s own family history. The text is punctuated by images of the exhibited works.

Closing the publication is a short biographical note that refers some of the key-moments of Yto Barrada’s international career.
