Meeting Point – Rembrandt | Paula Rego

Meeting Point is the title of a Calouste Gulbenkian Museum initiative that establishes a dialogue or confrontation between its collection and that of the Modern Art Centre. For this first encounter, the theme chosen is the representation of time through the presence of Rembrandt’s Portrait of an Old Man and Paula Rego’s O Tempo, Passado e Futuro.

In the publication accompanying this initiative, the curator Helena de Freitas expands on this unexpected encounter, which is complemented by the loan of a study for Paula Rego’s painting and a Rembrandt drawing from the British Museum, neither of which have been seen before in Portugal. This publication also includes a text by the curator Luísa Sampaio which revisits the Portrait of an Old Man, one of the masterpieces collected by Calouste Gulbenkian.
