On 23 April, the Calouste Gulbenkian Museum marked World Book and Copyright Day with a new exhibition Work in Focus, entitled Don Quixote / 1605 / 1615, to commemorate the double anniversary of the publication of The Ingenious Gentleman Don Quixote of La Mancha (410 years have passed since the publication of Part I and 400 years since Part II).

The museum has published a small brochure to accompany the exhibition. Aside from cataloguing the exhibited works, it highlights editions illustrated by Charles-Antoine Coypel (1746) and Albert Decaris (1951) that were purchased by Calouste Gulbenkian, as well as other illustrated editions from the exhibition that belong to the Art Library and a private collection.

The aim of the exhibition and brochure is to contribute to the creation of a permanent record of graphic depictions of Don Quixote and his companions and adventures over the past four centuries. As such, it includes not only illustrated editions from the exhibition, but also images that accompany the publication, reproducing the ‘quixotic’ theme found in the works of artists such as Goya, Daumier and Amadeo de Souza-Cardoso.
