Calouste S. Gulbenkian and English Taste

The catalogue Calouste S. Gulbenkian and English Taste, published to coincide with the exhibition of the same name, is divided into three separate sections.

The first, with text by João Carvalho Dias, who commissioned the exhibition, reflects on the emergence of the collection – which corresponds with the early years of Calouste Gulbenkian’s time in London – and covers several decades of acquisitions of English art or art ‘in the English taste’.

The second section features the selection of art objects – paintings, sculptures, engravings and book art – that make up the exhibition, reproduced in their entirety and accompanied by individual texts by João Carvalho Dias, Luísa Sampaio and Maria Rosa Figueiredo, curators at the Museum. Finally, the catalogue also contains a list of the books from Calouste Gulbenkian’s reference library and the archive material featured in the exhibition, with the aim of throwing a little more light on the many different facets of Calouste S. Gulbenkian as a collector.
