The exhibition catalogue for António Ole. Luanda, Los Angeles, Lisboa, a retrospective at the Museu Calouste Gulbenkian’s Modern Collection building, makes dynamic connections between texts and reproductions of works, establishing an experiential geography that explores and creates bridges between three cities that have played a decisive role in António Ole’s artistic career.
The texts are written by the exhibition’s curators, Isabel Carlos and Rita Fabiana, and by Nadine Siegert, a specialist in art and African studies. The first is an interview with the artist, in which António Ole offers a personal insight into his career and the diversity of his output (painting, photography, film, installation). The second uses the idea of the journey evoked by the three cities that have shaped the artist’s life and which provide the exhibition’s title as a starting point for exploring the themes and practices associated with his work (the sea, memory, history, slavery, migrations and forced labour, the gathering of objects and assemblage). Finally, the third text focuses on a chronological approach to the artist’s work and his relationship with the international art scene.
A biography, a chronology of the Township Wall series, a bibliography and the list of exhibited works complete this bilingual publication.
