Louis Legrand (1863-1951)
A selection of books presented in the 19th-century gallery
Sometimes Shade, Sometimes Light
Marie José Burki (Bienne, Switzerland, 1961) works primarily through the medium of film, drawing at times on photography, silkscreen printing and the use of objects in installations which she exploits from a formal, spatial, geometric, sonic and linguistic perspective.
Through simple narrative structures or by capturing unique significant moments, the characters she portrays are anonymous, banal figures or inspired by literary texts, starring in a suspended time and space, a moment of sensitivity, of reverie, of daily existence, of pose or of surprise.
The exhibition which she presents at the Calouste Gulbenkian Museum/Modern Collection is an adaptation of a project created for the Centre Régional de la Photographie, Nord Pas-de-Calais in Douchy les Mines and for the Kunsthaus Pasquart de Bienne in Switzerland during 2017.
