Excerpts of the concerts 'O meu coração é árabe' and 'Blind Date' with Canto Ondo and dance in the Modern Collection with Jorge Vaz and Marta Mendo

Event Slider

On this day of reopening our doors to the public and celebrating diversity in the museum (though without the possibility of live events), we recall some moments of music and dance that have taken place in the galleries of both collections, in the certainty of more moments like these in the future. We revisit some of the songs of Canto Ondo, featuring the voice of Tânia Cardoso and Sofia Portugal, guitar by Rodrigo Crespos and percussion by Baltazar Molina, who took part in the concert ‘My Heart is Arabic’ in the Islamic Orient Gallery in 2016. We also take this opportunity to recall the presence of the dancers Jorge Vaz and Marta Mendo in the choreographies Unreal, One of Us and Le Corsaire, which were part of the International Museum Day 2019 celebration in the galleries of the Modern Collection.

SPEAKERS

Canto Ondo was born at dawn in a terrace of Alentejo, with just a woman’s voice and a classical guitar. In addition to the voice of the actress and singer Tânia Cardoso and the guitar of Rodrigo Crespo, composer of all its original music, Canto Ondo features the sounds of the Middle Eastern drums of Baltazar Molina, Raquel Merrelho’s beautiful cello strings and the voice of the guest singer Sofia Adriana Portugal. Canto Ondo can mean a trip back to the land, the roots and the memories, but it can also be the singing of the poets that inspire their music, from the Al-Andaluz to the Portuguese speaking world. It is a chant that both recalls Portugal as well as the Mediterranean cultures, in a dialogue between music, poetry and storytelling, which create intimate moments of performance, shared with those who listen

“A sudden inspiration led me to become a Dancer at the age of 11. Working with different amazing choreographers and styles on a professional level is helping me to grow a lot as a dancer and as an individual person. I’m being challenged to explore mymovement and my possibilities to the limit, achieving goals that I never thought I would.” After one year of intensive training Marta Mendo was able to enter in the “Escola de Dança do Conservatório Nacional” EDCN (The Portuguese Conservatoire in Lisbon). There she has learned the perfectionism of the Vaganova style  with Russian, Japanese and Portuguese renowned teachers. After three years in EDCN, she has joined the Conservatório Internacional de Dança Annarella Sanchez where she had the opportunity to learn the Cuban and English styles with world-famous teachers from Cuba, Mexico, and Ukraine. She has tried to grab every opportunity to be on stage and to learn with different teachers and choreographers. In 2019 she has joined Junior Ballet Antwerp.

Jorge is a 17 year old ballet student in National Conservatory of Dance, in Lisbon. His passion for dance comes from early age, having started his studies in dance & arts at the age of 9, at National Conservatory of Dance (Lisbon), starting his path as a dancer. During his studies, he has also attended International Conservatory of Dance Annarella Sanchez (Leiria, Portugal) for 2 years, coming back to the National Conservatory of Dance, in Lisbon, where he is finishing his studies at the moment.
