Gulbenkian and the Portuguese Cinema cycle – Territories of Passage – , curated by Miguel Valverde, shows the work of Portuguese film directors, supported by Gulbenkian Foundation over the last decade. This Program is inspired by the 6 mouvements of Symphony n.4 by Philip Glass.

The narrative occurs during the shortest day of the year (in the Northern hemisphere), December 20th 2012. According to the Mayan calendar 21st will be the last day on Earth. Curiously and despite the inaccuracy of this prediction, this date does mark a historical moment; an extreme concern in regard to the future. The film was shot in places such as Lisbon, Tokyo, Mumbai, Biella (Italy), Oxford and Trás-os-Montes (Portugal), following 12 of Earth’s inhabitants throughout their daily routine in a portrayal of the end of an era. As the end of the day draws to a close, the idea that the end of a cycle is coming to a close and the necessity for change increases. As the sun rises a new hope is born alongside the opportunity to reinvent ourselves.

At the end of the session there is a conversation with the director, the curator Miguel Valverde and the italian film critic Paolo Moretti.
