The word (the Verb), the beginning and end of the human mind, challenges the quiet of the garden, the noise of the city, the sounds that break through mysterious nooks. The bodies vibrate. The word gets spoken. Five voices master the space, telling, enunciating, challenging; gaining impetus, resisting. The voices are youthful, ardent, imperial. They make themselves heard, in a dialogue (or duel) with the rumble of the city, with the quiet of the garden, with the silence of the audiences.

Talking is necessary.

We are all aware of the extent to which Fernando Pessoa admired the American poet Walt Whitman – he even wrote a “Greetings to Walt Whitman” (Álvaro de Campos), referring to him as “brother”: From here, from Portugal, in all of the epochs of my brain/, I greet you, Walt, I greet you, my brother in the Universe,(…). Taking into consideration this affinity, we are proposing a “duel” between these two poets, “as if they had really met each other” and with each reading out their most exhilarating works: “Ode Triunfal” (Fernando Pessoa under the heteronym of Álvaro de Campos) and “I Sing the Body Electric” by Walt Whitman.
