Jorge Queiroz and Arshile Gorky
5 Mar– 31 May 2021

Between the 5th of March and the 31st of May, the works of two singular artists will come together – Jorge Queiroz and Arshile Gorky – in the Gallery of the bottom floor of the Calouste Gulbenkian Museum. Jorge Queiroz (Lisbon, 1966) is the author of one of the most fascinating artistic universes of contemporary Portuguese art and Arshile Gorky (Khorkom, Armenia, b. 1904 – Sherman, Connecticut, 1948) is considered to be the «father» of the post-war American abstract expressionism and a fundamental reference of western art of the first half of the 20th century. The curatorship is made by Ana Vasconcelos.

Hugo Canoilas
2 Jul –  27 Sep 2021

Hugo Canoilas (Lisbon, 1977) will be presenting a project which was conceived specially for the temporary gallery of the Calouste Gulbenkian Museum as a result of an investigation he began in 2020 about the bottom of the ocean and the primitive organisms that inhabit it. The artist, who currently lives in Vienna, made an intense sensory installation which is inhabited by sculpture-paintings, «new forms of life» that come to be through colour and texture. Their fluidity brings them closer to their alchemical nature, as if, before our eyes, they undergo a metamorphosis. The exhibition, curated by Rita Fabiana, will take place on the bottom floor of the Calouste Gulbenkian Museum between the 2nd of July and the 27th of September 2021.

Visions of Dante. The Inferno according to Botticelli
23 Sep – 27 Nov 2021

As a part of the celebrations of the 700 years since the death of Dante Alighieri (1265-1321) the Gallery of the Renaissance will feature Visions of Dante. The Inferno according to Botticelli between the 23rd of September and the 27th of November. This exhibition will present two exceptional drawings on parchment referring to the «Inferno» of the Divine Comedy made by Sandro Botticelli (1445-1510), but also two manuscripts by Jacopo della Lana and Boccaccio, courtesy of the Vatican Library. The exhibition will also feature a copy of Dante’s manuscript, property of the Portuguese National Library, which belonged to Frei Manuel do Cenáculo, as well as other works of art from the collection of the Calouste Gulbenkian Foundation. On display there will also be a sculpture and drawings by Rui Chafes which make reference to Dante’s Inferno. The curatorship is made by João Carvalho Dias.

Hergé
7 Oct 2021 – 10 Jan 2022

The Main gallery of the Head Office will host Hergé, an exhibition that gathers an important selection of documents, drawings and works of art created by the notorious author of Tintin, between the 7th of October 2021 and the 10th of January 2022. It was presented to the public for the first time at the Grand Palais, in Paris, and organized in collaboration with the Hergé Museum at Louvain-la-Neuve. The exhibition reveals many sides of the artist who became a reference and worked across several fields other than comic book art and illustration such as advertising, press, fashion design and plastic arts. For the fans and everyone in general, this will be a unique opportunity to discover the treasures of the Hergé studios: original strips, paintings, pictures and documents belonging to the archives.

Morder o Pó by Fernão Cruz
22 Oct 2021 – 17 Jan 2022

The Museum will also host the first individual exhibition, in an institutional context, by Fernão Cruz (Lisbon, 1995), a young artist who has been formulating in his own way a question as old as mankind and which concerns death. Painting is usually, for him, a realm of fiction elevated by humour and by expansive gestures but in this project, Morder o pó, he opens a door to another dimension: a narrow passage and a dark place where sculpture is free falling into an unfathomable abyss. The curatorship is made by Leonor Nazaré and the exhibition will take place from the 22nd of October 2021 to the 17th of January 2022 in the gallery of the bottom floor of the Calouste Gulbenkian Museum.
