Human rights and the challenges of the 21st century

On 9th and 10th May, the Gulbenkian Foundation is hosting the conference Human rights and the challenges of the 21st century. Globalising Dignity. Commissioned by Viriato Soromenho-Marques, this conference is organised by the Gulbenkian Foundation, by the Robert F. Kennedy Center for Human Rights and by the Embassies of Austria and the United States of America.

In a world characterised by so many challenges and vulnerabilities, this conference seeks to discuss not only questions related to civil and political rights, economic and social rights but also individual and identity rights.

In Lisbon, marking the opening of the conference, late afternoon on the 9th, alongside the Gulbenkian Foundation President, Artur Santos Silva, will be Kerry Kennedy, writer, human rights activist and President of the Centre for Human Rights named after her father, Robert F. Kennedy, the Senator and U.S. Attorney General who was assassinated five years after his brother President John F. Kennedy. Following the opening session, the Bonifrates theatre company will perform the Ariel Dorfman play Speak truth to power, adapted by the company to the Portuguese language and already performed in countless countries.

The second day of the conference draws upon the participation of various national and international speakers divided into four panels that are to discuss the main themes interrelated with civil, social and individual rights as well as the challenges that the current century faces in terms of education for human rights. The conference comes to a close with speeches by Kerry Kennedy and Viriato Soromenho-Marques.

The first day the conference takes place in the Multipurpose Room and the second day in Auditorium 2. Entrance is free.
