The artistic residency program Artists 180º to the South, held in Hangar – Centre of Artistic Research in Lisbon has received support from the Calouste Gulbenkian Foundation for the rest of this year.

The objective of these residencies, with their focus on the artistic and cultural context of Lisbon, is the exchange of artists from Angola, Cape Verde, Mozambique and Sao Tome and Principe. In the 2016 edition, the Angolans Edson Chagas and Januário Jano, the Mozambicans Euridice Kala and Mário Macilau participated alongside the Cape Verdean Irineu Destourelles.

The residences seek to contribute towards the internationalisation and the development of the careers of participant artists, strengthening their networking skills, supporting the experimental production of new works and cultural exchanges alongside the dissemination of ideas and creative connections between the public and the artistic community. Simultaneously, this is a way of interrelating the African and Portuguese contexts.

During the time they spend in Lisbon, the artists engage in studio work, artist talks, performance programs, cinema cycles, study visits, educational programs as well as a parallel program for guest artists and curators. Hangar develops various residency programs and represents a space for welcoming African artists passing through Lisbon and correspondingly serving as a bridge in their relationships between Africa and Europe within the contemporary art panorama. Within the scope of cooperation for development, the Calouste Gulbenkian Foundation fosters artistic creativity and backing their training and internationalisation within Portuguese speaking African countries or in Europe.
