Another Collection
From 2007 and 2017 Catarina Figueiredo Cardoso gathered a collection with 5 070 works by contemporary Portuguese artists and also by international artists who either worked in Portugal or produced work interrelated with the country. Among the diverse sections of international importance in this collection are highlights such as editions of the art magazine Plages: revue d’art contemporain, published in Paris between 1978 and 2011 and that drew upon collaborations with Portuguese artists for some publications, and the Edições Pulcinoelefante book collections by the Italian Alberto Casiraghi.
These recently acquired works substantially expand and enrich the collection of around 600 independently published art books held by the Art Library, with a broad majority by contemporary Portuguese artists such as Ana Hatherly, José Escada, João Vieira, Lourdes Castro, René Bértholo, Alberto Carneiro, Leonor Antunes and Sílvia Prudêncio, among many others.
Catarina Figueiredo Cardoso is one of the founders of www.tipo.pt – an archive on art books, experimental graphic works, magazines and self-published books by Portuguese authors, artists, designers– and is a publisher, in partnership with the artist Isabel Baraona, of the Portuguese Small Press Year Book – an annually printed publication that compiles a list of the independent books released in Portugal ever since 2013.
As from 2019, editions like these are to be progressively integrated into the Art Library catalogue and archives and thereby becoming available for consultation.
