Calouste Gulbenkian Foundation at COP28

The Calouste Gulbenkian Foundation will be attending COP28 in Dubai, hosting or participating in a series of events at the first Portugal Pavilion, at the invitation of the government’s Ministry for Environment and Climate Action.

The Foundation will be showcasing insight and results from projects supported by our Sustainability Programme focused on Climate and Ocean action.

Alongside supporting the Portugal Pavilion programme, the Foundation will be participating in events and forums at COP28 to promote approaches to engage diverse audiences on ocean and climate action and the role of philanthropy in achieving fairer, more sustainable societies.

The Conference of the Parties (COP) is the annual climate negotiations summit organised by the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC). This 28th COP is hosted by the United Arab Emirates and will take place in Dubai. COP28 will be a milestone for governments, civil society, industries and all sectors to progress climate action.

Accelerating Climate Action through Public Participation

Effective public engagement – and the active participation of citizens in climate plans – builds social trust, leads to fairer decisions, and grows support for transformative changes. This session will explore how citizens, especially those under-represented, can be involved effectively in climate decision-making. Hear research and case studies on how to activate public participation and mobilise local communities and civil society to address climate change and ensure a just energy transition.

Connecting Blue Carbon Experiences: Guiding Climate Impact for a Sustainable Tomorrow

In this session presented jointly by the Calouste Gulbenkian Foundation and ANP|WWF, hear about the role of the ocean as a key ally in halting climate change. The discussion will present the Gulbenkian Blue Carbon project, which is developing the scientific knowledge needed to create a voluntary blue carbon market in Portugal. In this context, speakers will share their experience working on blue carbon ecosystem conservation and restoration projects in the Community of Portuguese Speaking Countries, which together has more than 15,000 km of coastline.

The Foundation will also be participating in forums advocating for investment, capacity building and scaling of effective engagement on climate and ocean action.

The film ‘What the Ocean Reveals About Us’, produced with funding from the Foundation, will be screened by BBC StoryWorks and the Global Climate and Health Alliance at the Green Zone stage for civil society attending COP28.

The Foundation and supported partners including Comms Inc will be promoting the value of communications to gain support for ocean action through events at the OceanX Pavilion and Nature Pavilion in the main COP28 arena. Our partners Climate Outreach are making the case that public engagement can unlock progress on climate at various events during COP28.
