In this book, British art historian, broadcaster and curator Katy Hessel presents the impressive art of Renaissance painter Sofonisba Anguissola, the radical work of Harriet Powers in the twentieth century, and the fascinating story of baroness Von Freytag-Loringhoven, the real inventor of the Readymade.
Whether on the subject of the Dutch Golden Age, the astonishing work of postwar artists in Latin America, or the women artists defining Art today, ‘The Story of Art Without Men’ continually surprises its readers and challenges the status quo, including new art forms that were previously overlooked or dismissed.
In partnership with the publisher Penguin Radom House, the book will be presented at the Gulbenkian Foundation, with a conversation between Hessel and CAM’s Deputy Director, Ana Botella.

Katy Hessel
Katy Hessel is a British art historian, broadcaster and curator. She created and runs the @thegreatwomenartists Instagram account, writes and hosts The Great Women Artists Podcast and she is the host of Dior Talks — Feminist Art. Hessel has written extensively about women artists for British Vogue and Harper’s Bazaar, has curated exhibitions at Victoria Miro Gallery, Stephen Friedman Gallery and Kasmin Gallery, and runs the annual The Great Women Artists Residency at Palazzo Monti, in Brescia. She has lectured at The National Gallery and Cambridge University, and has written and presented documentaries about art for the BBC. In 2021, she became an alumni of Forbes 30 Under 30 in Arts and Culture.

Ana Botella
Ana Botella Diez del Corral is a creative producer, programmer and cultural strategist with a passion for institutional change. Currently based in Lisbon, she is Deputy Director at CAM. Ana was previously Acting Head of Programmes at London’s Wellcome Collection, a museum and library challenging the way we think and feel about health. Between 2012 – 2019 she was Head of Programme at FACT, Liverpool’s Foundation for Art and Creative Technology, and between 2007 – 2012 she was Head of Exhibitions and Publications at LABoral Centre for Art and Industrial Creation, an organisation in Northern Spain focusing on the intersection between art, science, technology and the creative industries.
