The Latin expression sol lucet omnibus, more commonly recognised as “The sun shines for everyone”, represents the universal right to enjoy the gifts of nature. Based around the theme of the New Year, “Alma Nova” (New Soul or New you), mirrors this popular expression, communicating the idea that there is also a plurality of uses and reformulation within music that often break from what has been done in the past. This diversity is represented by works from Amy Beach, Eric Whitacre and Sarah Quartel from across the Atlantic, as well as Britten, Mendelssohn, Poulenc, Holst, Reger and Schumann from Europe. The programme also features the most iconic a cappella choral pieces of C. V. Stanford and a spirited toast to the New Year from Rossini.
