Ecotones – Sounds that colour the surface of the water

Event Slider

Did you know that you can paint with sound vibrations on the surface of water? In this workshop for families we will combine the technique of Suminagashi, a Japanese art of painting on the surface of water, and cymatics, a science that studies visible sound vibration.

Together we will learn creatively about sound, vibration and the ways in which they can alter a body of water and the organisms that inhabit it.

As we ‘capture’ the frequency of the sound imprinted in the movement of the ink on the paper, we observe the shapes transforming with the sounds of fish, a cymbal or even a violin bow.

This activity combines the fields of sound, geometry, light and mathematics into one, allowing a visual understanding of how sound vibration interacts with water and ink.
