CAMigraphies: joining writing and drawing

Cartão Gulbenkian Mais programme

The word “calligraphy” has Greek origins and means “beautiful writing”. In Japan, the art of Shodô is translated as “the ways of writing”, evoking the harmony between gesture and thought. Inspired by the exhibition “The Occidental Calligrapher. Fernando Lemos and Japan”, this drawing workshop invites Cartão Gulbenkian Mais holders to create characters and ideograms on paper, promoting graphic experiments that challenge the look and manual practice of drawing.

In this creative space, all elements count: the texture and differences of the papers, the intensity and opacity of the paint, the fluidity of the brush, the precision of the nib, as well as breathing and concentration. An experimental approach that combines materials and techniques, revealing affinities and contrasts through practical exercises carried out inside and outside the CAM. Basic material will be distributed but participants who wish can bring their markers and notebooks.
