Artyom Manukyan Trio Debut in Lisbon

The Armenian cellist Artyom Manukyan makes his Lisbon premiere with a concert in the Summer Garden. He brings with him his challenging musical approach that combines his studies in the Erevan Conservatory with various collaborations in the field of jazz.

Manukyan, with his varied influences rendering his compositions multidimensional and unique, is joined in concert on this occasion by Vardan Ovsepian (on piano) and Christian Euman (on drums) revisiting songs from his debut album, Citizen.

Completed his classical cello education at the State Conservatory, and later joined the BBC award winning, Armenian Navy Band, as its youngest member. Since moving to Los Angeles in 2010, Artyom has been in demand as a session musician and soundtrack composer (Hannibal season 2, Dear White People season 2, Cartel Land, Zipper, Central Intelligence, Geostorm, Birth of a Dragon, Luke Cage), as well as performing live with diverse players (Everlast, Kamasi Washington, Melody Gardot, Daedalus, Flying Lotus, Peter Erskine, Hadrien Feraud, Charles Altura, MdCL, Tigran Hamasyan, Herb Alpert, Capital Cities, Vahagni, VOCE, Gretchen Parlato, Virgil Donati and many more). Artyom also performs on TV shows including Dr. Phil and Jimmy Kimmel Live where he has joined Coldplay, Bono and Odesza for performances. After the success of his debut solo album, “Citizen”, Artyom has been touring and working on two upcoming albums due for release in 2018. Artyom teaches private lessons and has been invited as a guest teacher at the world-renowned Tumo Center for Creative Technologies.

Armenia-born pianist/composer whose studies include Yerevan State Conservatory, Estonian Music Academy, Helsinki Jazz Conservatory, and Berklee College of Music. In addition to teaching at The Musical Suite in Newburyport, MA, he performed and taught master classes at Fairbanks Summer Arts Festival (AK),Maine Jazz Camp (ME), Towson University (MD), Susquehanna University (PA),Bucknell University (PA), Wheeler School (RI), Estonian Music Academy (Tallinn,Estonia), Swarnabhoomi Academy of Music (Chennai, India), Sacheon International Jazz Workshop (Sacheon, S. Korea), Beijing Contemporary Music Academy (Beijing, China), CalArts (CA) and Berklee College of Music (MA). Vardan has released five CDs with “Fresh Sound New Talent” label, independent releases of VOCE - Vardan Ovsepian Chamber Ensemble (2006 and 2013), plus several duo/trio albums. Recent awards and publications include First Prize at the Achava Jazz Award (Erfurt, Germany - 2017), Chamber Music America Grant for New Jazz Works program funded by the Doris Duke Charitable Foundation (New York, NY- 2017), and a release of Peter Erskine New Trio album “In Praise of Shadows”.

His musicianship was shaped during his tenure as a student at Western Michigan University, as well as at the prestigious Thelonious Monk Institute of Jazz Performance at UCLA where he studied and shared many stages with Herbie Hancock, Wayne Shorter, Dee Dee Bridgewater, Chris Potter, Jimmy Heath, Stefon Harris, and many more. Christian has since performed with Kurt Elling, Billy Childs, Walter Smith III, Jacob Collier, Mike Moreno, and many others. Performance highlights include being the featured drummer for “La La Land: Live” at the Hollywood Bowl, conducted by the film’s scorer Justin Hurwitz; spots at prominent festivals including the North Sea Jazz Festival, Playboy Jazz Festival, Monterey Jazz Festival; as well as an educational performance in the White House hosted by the Obamas.
