New FCT Projects

IGC secures 5 projects as a leader and one as a partner, ensuring a success rate 3 times higher than the national rate.

Miguel Soares, Karina Xavier, Isabel Gordo, Rui Oliveira and Esther Novo-uzal are the Instituto Gulbenkian de Ciência researchers who have been awarded a grant to lead scientific projects. Ivo Telley, also saw his project approved, but this one coordinated by the University of Aveiro. The projects will be developed for a period of three years.

In total, in 2020, 312 grants were awarded at the national level in the R&D project contest of the Fundação para a Ciência e Tecnologia.

The 312 projects recommended for funding are distributed across different scientific domains: Medical and Health Sciences – 17.6%, Engineering Sciences and Technologies – 25.3%, Natural Sciences – 17.9%, Social Sciences – 12.2%, Exact Sciences – 11.2%, Agrarian Sciences – 8.7% and Humanities – 7.1%.

The main researchers who lead the funded projects are mostly men, representing 56.7% of the total, and 13.5% are foreign researchers, of 20 nationalities, who work in research centers in Portugal and lead 42 of the selected projects.

The competition for IC&DT projects in all scientific areas has an annual frequency and is part of the set of major structural competitions of FCT.
