Ana Morais – Head of Unit 

Institutional Communication is responsible for defining and implementing the Institute’s communication and marketing strategy in close articulation with the Board and the Calouste Gulbenkian Foundation.

Activities
The ICOMM Unit helps the IGC community in a wide range of activities:  

  • Press Releases and media coverage: all requests and enquiries are managed by the ICOMM team 
  • Social media channels: digital tools with special focus on brand awareness and science communication 
  • Institutional website: development, update and monitoring 
  • Audiovisual materials: promoting innovative and clear messages about the research developed at the IGC 
  • Illustration and science writing: promoting the new findings to different target audiences  
  • Partner’s involvement and engagement: developing common strategies to showcase joint projects and findings  
  • Internal Communication: share and promote activities among the IGC community to increase engagement such as: newsletters and corporate TV 
  • Annual Report: publication coordination and production. 

 


Public Engagement Unit

The Public Engagement unit develops activities focused on bringing science to society. Dialogue between scientists and society is crucial for involving all audiences in the social implications of research and for better understanding the scientific process underlying research and discovery.


Biosafety Team

The Biosafety team, integrated on the Human Resources Service, aims to ensure the protection of all IGC workers and visitors. At the same time Biosafety team is focused on protecting the environment and the community around in order to establish trust with the public.

The Informatics Technical Infrastructure (ITI) is responsible for managing and maintaining the IT of the IGC.

Some of the services provided by the ITI includes E-Mail, VPN, printing, hosting of servers and services for researchers, administrative and collaborative Intranet services, central data storage, database and web site maintenance, surveillance and access control, consulting, training and support.

Our services rely heavily on Open Source and we strive to support equally all of the Windows, Mac and Linux platforms.


Scientific Equipment and Infrastructures Unit

The unit aims to input the direction for new equipment and infrastructures investments and planning, including the new Ocean Campus building. We are also in close connection with other institutions for common resources strategy through, a) following up on national infrastructures roadmaps, b) offering infrastructures managing software as a service (www.agendo.science), c) promoting inter-institutions services together with CoLife.eu

We also run a service to democratize the usage of Internet of Things in research infrastructures, by using technology developed for smart cities. This solution is currently deployed in 6 major research institutions in Portugal, and the US.

The Research Funding Affairs Unit is responsible for the implementation of a pre-award grant administration service. Its main goal is to increase the IGC's capacity to attract research funds and to improve direct fund-raising by research teams, and their scientific projects, for competitive calls launched by national, international, public and private grant programs.

This unit reports directly to the IGC Director, understands the different grant financial policies and requirements and works in collaboration with researchers & the Admin unit, project managers and finance staff.

The Research Funding Affairs Unit was created in 2008 and is part of several support structures and services that the IGC has created for researchers to leverage international competiveness and scientific recognition.

Gulbenkian Collaborative Centre

Created in 2020 with the support from Oeiras City Council, the Gulbenkian Collaborative Centre has a fundamental role in establishing IGC, Oeiras and the greater Lisbon region at large, as a hub of Science and Innovation of international relevance.

The Collaborative Centre, first of its kind in Europe, aims to promote the advancement of life sciences by enhancing interdisciplinary and collaborative research. More specifically, the Centre will:

  • offer opportunities for exciting unusual encounters that generate new questions, hypotheses and experimental models;
  • provide the necessary infrastructure and collaborative environment for testing innovative ideas, projects or products;
  • train scientists and members of the public in and about collaborative and interdisciplinary science.

More specifically, the Centre will promote activities founded on three main pillars: internationalization, innovation and participation.


Events & Welcome Unit

Events & Welcome Unit is responsible for:

- Meetings, conferences and simposia organisation of logistics for the IGC;

- Travel arrangements for IGC visitors;

- Seminars Visitor logistics;

- Welcome issues: admin support for new incoming researchers on all issues related to settling down in Portugal and at the IGC.  The IGC is part of the Euraxess - a EU network that supports researcher mobility;

- Meeting rooms bookings.

The Maintenance Unit provides support in all general maintenance (excluding scientific equipment and units), electricity, AVAC, buildings, gardening, cleaning and gives support to other activities that need it, such as garbage - general and biohazard - reconstruction and adaptation, etc.

The Unit is responsible for the following areas:
1. Maintenance of common scientific equipment;
2. Distribution, maintenance and creation of scientific spaces;
3. Maintenance of all cold storage areas (liquid nitrogen, -80ºC, -20ºC, 4ºC, cold rooms);
4. Management of the Washing Room, service that provides clean and sterilized labware, as well high-quality media and solutions for the research groups;
5. This Unit interacts with all the support services and facilities in the daily problem-solving needs.
