Bioinformatics
The Bioinformatics Unit at Instituto Gulbenkian de Ciência provides a broad range of support in data analysis and computational biology. We have established a system to interact actively with internal and external laboratories, ranging from experimental design and data processing to statistics and data visualization. The unit has a wide range of external collaborations with BioData.pt, ELIXIR European, ITQB, IMM, EMBL-EBI and multiple universities all over the world.
Location: Yuri Gagarin wing at the Library Building in IGC

If associated to the IGC, create a task in the IGC Agendo clearly stating your goal, as well as a brief description of your case.
If not associated to the IGC, or in the case of a potentially large, complex project, contact the unit head Dr. Jingtao Lilue ([email protected]) to discuss the project and how could we assist.
The Bioinformatics Unit is available to collaborate in grant applications, where we can provide a fraction of their time to the project, depending on the required expertise. We encourage researchers to contact the us early in the project design.
Cost
The Bioinformatics Facility charges for its services by person/hour. For researchers associated to the IGC this cost is €25. For external users, this cost is 50€ per person/hour.
For larger projects we provide an initial estimate of persons/hour, which is revised regularly according to the progress of the project.
Prioritization Of Work
We track the persons/hour allocated for every project.
Priority will be given to projects for which there is funding directly associated to the Bioinformatics Unit, namely through time officially allocated to members of the facility.
EQUIPMENT

SERVICES & TECHNIQUES
We provide consulting services in bioinformatics and computational biology during initial stages of study design and grant proposals.
We also provide a broad range of support for ongoing studies requiring external expertise in bioinformatics.
Examples of support include help accessing existing databases, help in using specific bioinformatics software, choosing bioinformatics tools and strategies to answer specific biological questions, etc...
We can provide assistance in the analysis of a broad range of biological data, from phylogenetic analysis to studies using high-throughput sequencing technologies such as ChIP-seq, RNA-Seq and genome re-sequencing.
Next Generation Sequencing
- Quality assessment of sequencing reads and / or alignments.
- Inference of enriched regions in ChIP-seq experiments and motif detection.
- Differential expression of plant miRNAs from miRNA-seq experiments.
- Detection of splicing events from mRNA-seq.
- Resequencing of bacterial genomes and detection of genomic events.
- Denovo assembly of small genomes.
