Margarida Brito Alves coments
«Other Criteria» by Leo Steinberg – Expanded field review

3 July   |  17h30-18h30   |  atrium   |  free entrance

Sinopsis

This presentation intends to problematize the critical position of Leo Steinberg, taking as a starting point the text “Other Criteria” published in 1972 in the Artforum magazine. In discussing various criteria of critical appreciation and in opposition to a purely formalist approach – but without giving up a formal analysis – Steinberg then proposes a more complex reading of the work of art, informed both by its historical context and by the subjective experience of the spectator. In this sense, by expanding his argument and assuming a personal record (if not even emotive), questions the perspective of authors such as Clement Greenberg or Harold Rosenberg and establishes links between different temporalities convoking artists like Robert Rauschenberg, Kenneth Noland and Jasper Johns, but also like Giotto, Miguel Ângelo or Rembrandt.
