Artist Books and Independent Editions

The Art Library's collection is constantly growing and has an international scope. However, the largest number of items in it are by Portuguese artists or foreigners residing in Portugal, from various generations, reflecting national artistic creation from the 1960s onwards.

The artists’ relationship with the book is as old as the book itself. The “book” is often just a conceptual reference used as a support for a specific artistic project, not reduced to paper and ink, but incorporating all kinds of materials the artist wishes to use. In this collection, which includes “independent edition” books – sometimes the line separating them from artist’s books is very thin -, one finds both single and multiple works, of various formats and sizes: books printed in offset, digital or moveable type; books produced entirely by hand or in which the artist had a direct intervention in their printing; books with print runs of up to hundreds of copies or just a dozen, or even special editions, or even special editions, accompanied by original drawings and/or paintings, engravings and/or serigraphs.
