One of the central priorities of the Armenian Communities Department has always been to support Armenian students worldwide and promote Armenian studies.  During the past five years (2014-2018) we have awarded around US$ 5,2 million in scholarships to 1,207 students, academics and researchers.

Unfortunately, the need is greater than what we are able to provide. We receive on average around 700 applications per year and our resources are only able to satisfy around 250 scholarships yearly. The selection is made based on the merit of each applicant. Below are some highlights regarding three of our most prominent scholarship categories during 2018.

We received 29 applications for the Global Excellence Scholarship category in 2018 and awarded nine new scholarships, seven to candidates from Armenia and one to a candidate from Canada, to pursue their doctoral studies in various universities in the US and Europe. Study areas include Asian Studies, Human Geography, Law, Archaeology, Chemistry, International Relations and Human Rights. These awards were in addition to the 4 renewals from last year. Over the past five year’s students in this category have attended internationally recognized universities in the US, UK, Canada, France, Lebanon, Luxembourg.

Within the Armenian Studies category, we received 63 applications in 2018. We granted 13 new scholarships to students from Armenia, Canada, The Netherlands, Russia, Turkey and the USA.  10 awardees are pursuing their doctoral studies at the following universities:  UCLA, San Diego, Clark University, Oxford University, Université de Montreal, Université Paul Valéry, Institut National des Langues et Civilisations Orientales (INALCO), the University of Amsterdam and Lisbon University. Two awardees are Master students at Duke University and Sussex University and one is a Post Doc researcher at the University of Wisconsin. The total number of Armenian Studies scholarships either granted or renewed in the 2018-2019 academic year is 28, excluding the short term awards for research trips and conferences.

Finally, in 2018 we received 208 applications for our Undergraduate Studies Scholarship. Out of these, 63% of the candidates had a GPA between 3.3 and 4.  We awarded 34 new scholarships. Technology was the field of studies with the largest number of scholarships and Lebanon the country of citizenship with most awardees.
