Initiatives in Armenia
To support civil society and intellectual creativity in Armenia in order to consolidate democratic culture.
The Calouste Gulbenkian Foundation has been active in Armenia for decades. We continue this engagement. Armenia is a crucial centre of cultural and academic production and a hub of global networks that bind Armenians together.
Programmes in Armenia focus on civic education, civil society support and the promotion of critical thinking and academic excellence. We support initiatives that contribute to the strengthening of certain sectors of civil society, intellectual development in line with global trends in the social sciences, as well as projects that are at the interface of IT and language.
Our programming in this domain includes the following initiatives:
- Providing grants to civil society organisations, particularly those who work on youth engagement, civic education, women’s rights and participation, as well as support to independent media.
- Supporting research and publications (print and electronic), including the translations of important social science texts which have not been made available in Armenian to date.
- Sponsoring academic research, workshops and conferences on subjects of current relevance to Armenia that emphasise critical thinking and innovation, including travel grants to academic events abroad.
- Supporting information technology initiatives that pertain to the Armenian language.
These activities are undertaken in partnership with civil society organisations, appropriate state agencies, academic institutions, publishers and expert individuals.
