José Escada (1934-1980) Painting, 1958. Acrylic paint on canvas, 78.5 x 54 cm. Ana Maria Bénard da Costa collection

Painting

1958

“If you wanted […] you could call it an abstract painting. But I remember that Escada […] talked to me about the Virgin Mary in the sea, or the sea with the Virgin Mary, or the Virgin Mary on a morning at sea. […] I only add that if you saw it, you probably would see the sea, but not the Virgin Mary. That shouldn’t be a surprise: we see the sea at every step, I have never met anyone who has seen the Virgin Mary.”
